A little snippet on the growth of Tamworth

from Shirley’s Scrapbook TFHG Journal

POPULATION GROWTH:   In 1850, Tamworth was described as a small group of houses, two stores, two hotels, a lock up, and a church with a population of 166 males and 88 females.   In 1856 there were 247 males and 201 females.   By 1860, 347 males and 304 females.   Six years later the population had reached 850 persons.   The town, by now had a hospital, post office, telegraph station, police office, courthouse, goal, two churches, two schools, a newspaper, a friendship lodge, five hotels, two banks, insurance office, a number of retail businesses, dwellings, transport by coach to the many outlying neighbouring towns and villages.   Teamsters were numerous plying their trade of carrying goods.

We meet on the first Saturday of February, April, June, August, October and December usually at the Family History Rooms 62-64 North St Tamworth. On odd occasions we may have to change the day to the second Saturday. To confirm, please phone (02) 6765 2122
